What a wavelength game is

A wavelength game is a simple mind-reading party game built on a spectrum. Two extremes sit on the ends of a line. A hidden target sits somewhere between them. The Psychic sees that mark and must point at it with one clue. Guessers then move a dial and try to land on the same feeling. When you play a wavelength game, you are not looking up a fact. You are guessing how your friends think. That is why a wavelength game works at a loud dinner and also on a quiet call. Wavelength game keeps the loop in the browser so you can try a wavelength game without buying a box or installing an app.

  • A secret target
Every wavelength game round draws a spectrum between two extremes — Hot ↔ Cold, Safe ↔ Dangerous — and hides a target from 0 to 100. Only the Psychic can see the mark until the reveal.
  • One short clue
The Psychic sees the target and offers a word or short phrase. No pointing at the number. In a wavelength game, a good clue makes the guesser feel the spot, not hear a lecture.
  • Slide, lock, score
Guessers move the dial, lock it in, then reveal. Closer bands score more. After that, the other team can call left or right of the needle. Miss the zone and the wavelength game gives you nothing for the main guess.

Who this wavelength game is for

The same energy as a living-room board game, without the box or a download. A wavelength game is for people who like to talk, guess, and laugh when a clue lands in the wrong place. Use it as an icebreaker, a date-night habit, or the first round of a longer game night.

Warm up a dinner, a birthday, or a game night with a wavelength game that takes one device and a loud room. New guests can learn in one round. The first clue is already an icebreaker, because everyone has to say how they heard it. You do not need to print cards or deal a box onto the table.

What you get in this wavelength game

A playable core on the landing page — enough to feel a wavelength game right away. You get a circular dial, two team score rails, and a first-to-10 hotseat match.

Built-in spectrums

A starter deck of extremes so you can play a wavelength game immediately. Hot and cold is only the beginning. Topic chips let you keep the mix party-safe or lean into spicier cards.

Psychic and guesser flow

Hotseat roles on one device. Peek at the target, submit a clue, close the cover, then pass the screen. A wavelength game only works if guessers never see the mark before they lock the dial.

Dial you can actually aim

A 0–100 spectrum with a sliding guess, left and right labels, and a reveal that shows both needles. This is the heart of the wavelength game board: turn the red dial, then lock it.

Band scoring you can read

The Psychic team scores 4 within ±5, 3 within ±10, 2 within ±15, and 0 if the guess is wider. Those bands are printed on the demo so a wavelength game score never feels hidden.

Two-team first-to-10

Left Brain and Right Brain sit on side score rails from 0 to 10. First to 10 with a lead wins. If both teams hit 10 in the same stretch, the wavelength game stays in sudden death until one team leads. The Psychic role swaps each round.

How a wavelength game works

A wavelength game has five beats: Psychic, clue, dial, reveal, and score. Then you argue about the clue. Learn the loop once and you can host a wavelength game on any couch or call.

1

Psychic sees the target

A spectrum appears. Only the Psychic can see where the secret mark sits. Other players look away. This is the first rule of a wavelength game, and it keeps the reveal honest.

2

Give one clue

Say a word or short phrase, then pass the device so nobody else sees the target. A wavelength game clue should be short. If you need a speech, the idea is probably too sharp or too vague.

3

Guess, reveal, score

Slide the dial, lock it in, and score by how close you landed. After the lock, the other team may call left or right of the needle for a bonus point if the Psychic team missed the bullseye. Then the wavelength game swaps who is Psychic.

Two roles. One argument.

This wavelength game is inspired by Wavelength. It is not the official board game. The fun is the gap between the clue you meant and the clue your friends heard. Read both roles before you host a wavelength game so the peek, the pass, and the lock stay clean.

Psychic role in Wavelength game — peek at the hidden target
Psychic

See the mark. Say almost nothing.

You get the secret target. Your job in a wavelength game is a clue that points at the feeling of that spot — not the number, not the label, and not a riddle that only you enjoy. Think about how this group places ideas on a line. A word they all know is better than a clever word they have to decode. If the target is mild, do not pick an extreme example. If the target is wild, do not pick a safe one.

Guesser

Trust the clue. Move the dial.

You never see the target until reveal. Read the spectrum, hear the clue, and commit to a spot. In this wavelength game, one team owns the needle. Talk if you want, then lock before anyone peeks. After you lock, the other team can still guess whether the mark sits left or right of your needle. That side call is a small bonus, not a second full turn.

Simple rules. Loud opinions.

Close enough is the whole sport of a wavelength game. The numbers stay small so the table can fight about the clue instead of the math.

FAQ

Questions before you slide the dial

Short questions, real answers. If you want the fun of a wavelength game without a store trip, start here, then jump to the demo.

1

Is this the official Wavelength board game?

No. This is an independent wavelength game inspired by Wavelength. It is not affiliated with, endorsed by, or a substitute for the official Wavelength board game. We do not sell that box, and we do not claim to be the company that made it. If you already love the table version, think of this wavelength game as a free browser warm-up with its own two-team scoring.

2

What is a wavelength game?

A wavelength game is a party game about shared taste. Each round places two extremes on a line and hides a target between them. One Psychic sees the target and gives a single clue. Everyone else moves a dial toward the place they think that clue belongs. Then you reveal, score, and swap roles. People search for a wavelength game when they want a talking game that is easy to teach and hard to stop after one round.

3

How do you play this wavelength game?

Pick two teams: Left Brain and Right Brain. One team is the Psychic. That player peeks at the hidden target, gives one clue, and closes the cover. Guessers slide the dial and lock it. Reveal the mark and score the band. If the Psychic team missed the bullseye, the other team may still earn one point by calling left or right of the needle. Then the Psychic role swaps. Keep going until a team reaches 10 with a lead. That is the whole wavelength game loop: psychic, clue, dial, reveal, score.

4

Is this wavelength game free in the browser?

Yes. This wavelength game is free to try in your browser. There is no download, no app store, and no account wall on the hotseat demo. Open the page, scroll to the board, and start a round. You can finish a full first-to-10 match on one phone or laptop.

5

How does scoring work in this wavelength game?

The target and guess both sit on a 0–100 spectrum. Within ±5 scores 4 points, ±10 scores 3, ±15 scores 2, and anything farther is 0 for the main guess. This wavelength game is two-team hotseat, not a single running total. Left Brain and Right Brain climb side rails from 0 to 10. First to 10 with a lead wins. If both teams are tied at 10 or more, you keep playing sudden death until one team leads. After a lock, the opposing team can call left or right of the needle for +1 when they are right and the Psychic team missed the bullseye.

6

Can I play a wavelength game on Discord or Zoom?

Yes, as a shared-screen hotseat. One person opens this wavelength game, shares the window on Discord or Zoom, and drives the dial while others talk. That works for remote friends, office icebreakers, and long-distance couples who are not in the same room.

7

Who is this wavelength game for?

This wavelength game is for game night hosts, friend groups, couples, long-distance pairs, and anyone who needs a fast icebreaker. If your group likes talking more than memorizing rules, you will like it. Kids who can read a clue and adults who like a little chaos both fit. You only need one device and a few people who will say a guess out loud.

8

What makes a good clue in a wavelength game?

A good wavelength game clue is short, shared, and honest about intensity. Name one thing the group already knows, then stop. Do not say the number. Do not name the left or right label. Do not stack three hints. If the target is only a little bit “dangerous,” pick a mild example, not a disaster. If the target is extreme, pick something the group would also call extreme. When a clue fails, that is still the wavelength game working: you just learned how your friends rank the world.

9

Does everyone need their own device?

No. This wavelength game is hotseat on one screen. Pass the phone around the couch, or share one window on a video call. You get the dial, two score rails, and a first-to-10 match in the browser.

10

Do I need an account to play a wavelength game?

Not for the demo. Open the site, become the Psychic, and pass the device. A wavelength game should be easy to start while food is still on the table. If you only came to try a free wavelength game in the browser, you are already in the right place.
